The square pin nose pads were similar to the split pin nose pads and would be seen on the same nose pad arms. The square pin nose pads were more involved when mounting onto the eyeglass frame. They usually had a small ring that went around the post of the square pin nose pads that was held in place while the end of the post was flattened down so that the end could no longer pass through the small ring. This created retention and kept the nose pads in place. since this process was more involved than any other nose pad mounting, the split pin nose pads became a successor to the square pin nose pads by offering an easier alternative to mounting replacement nose pads.
